How to choose an SEO Chrome extension

Decide which job you need done

Keyword extensions answer "how many people search this, and what does a click cost". Authority extensions answer "how strong are the sites I am up against". Audit extensions answer "what is wrong with this page". Few do all three, which is why most people end up with two or three installed.

Check what is actually free

Many extensions are free to install and then ask for an account, credits or a subscription for the numbers you wanted. The price column above and the facts in each review say where that line falls.

Check when it was last updated

Google changes its results page often, and Chrome changes its rules for extensions. An extension that has not been updated in two years may still work, but it is a risk. Each review gives the date from the Chrome Web Store.

Count the panels

Every extension that runs on Google adds something to the page. Three of them together make results slow and hard to read. An extension that covers more than one job keeps the page clean.

The 13 best SEO Chrome extensions

1. KWScanner

Top pick: keyword data, authority and a page audit in one
  • PriceAudit and badges free; keyword data from $5
  • Account neededOnly for keyword data
  • BrowsersChrome and Firefox

Most SEO extensions do one of three jobs: show keyword numbers on Google, show how strong the ranking sites are, or audit the page you are on. KWScanner does all three, and two of them are free.

Search on Google and the search volume, cost per click, competition and a trend of up to four years appear on the results page, with a Domain Rating and domain age badge beside every result. Open the extension on any page and it runs a full on-page SEO audit with a PDF report. The audit and the badges use no credits and need no account. Keyword lookups cost one credit each, and every new account starts with 10,000 free credits. The full feature list is below.

Strengths

  • Keyword numbers, authority and on-page audit in one extension
  • Audit and Domain Rating badges are free, with no account
  • Trend of up to four years, not only twelve months
  • Volume, CPC and competition match Google Ads
  • Chrome and Firefox

Weaknesses

  • Keyword data works on Google only, not YouTube or Amazon
  • Worldwide plus seven countries
  • Keyword lookups use credits once the free 10,000 are spent

2. Keywords Everywhere

Best for keyword data beyond Google
  • PriceAnnual plans from $84/year (100,000 credits)
  • Account neededFor paid data
  • BrowsersChrome, Firefox and Edge
  • Chrome Web Store1,000,000 users, updated September 2026

Keywords Everywhere is the best-known keyword extension. With paid credits it shows volume, CPC, competition and trend charts on Google and more than fifteen other sites, including YouTube and Amazon.

Without credits it still shows keyword widgets, an on-page analysis, link metrics and traffic estimates, but not the volume or CPC most people install it for. Credits are sold as annual plans and are valid for a year. See the Keywords Everywhere alternative page.

Strengths

  • Works on Google, YouTube, Amazon and many more sites
  • Low yearly cost
  • Useful free widgets

Weaknesses

  • Volume and CPC need paid credits
  • Annual prepayment; credits expire after a year
  • Related keywords in widgets also use credits

3. Keyword Surfer

Best free volume on Google
  • PriceFree
  • Account neededNo
  • BrowsersChrome
  • Chrome Web Store600,000 users, updated January 2026

Keyword Surfer, from Surfer, shows search volume and CPC on Google results at no cost, with keyword ideas in a side panel, for 70 countries. You can save keywords into collections and export them.

It is the simplest way to see a volume for free. Surfer does not say where the figures come from, there is no competition figure or trend, and it does no on-page or link checking. Compare the two on the Keyword Surfer alternative page.

Strengths

  • Free, with no account
  • Volume and CPC on Google for 70 countries
  • Exportable keyword collections

Weaknesses

  • Data source is undisclosed
  • No competition, trend or authority data
  • Chrome only; last updated in January 2026

4. Ubersuggest

Best free volume on YouTube and Amazon
  • PriceFree with daily limits; paid plans optional
  • Account neededNo
  • BrowsersChrome
  • Chrome Web Store600,000 users, updated September 2026

The Ubersuggest extension shows volume, CPC and competition on Google, YouTube and Amazon, along with a domain score, referring domains and traffic estimates for the sites that rank.

Its listing says every feature is free with daily limits and no account. The limits are not published, so heavy use will run into them. The Ubersuggest alternative page covers the full product.

Strengths

  • Free without an account
  • Covers YouTube and Amazon as well as Google
  • Domain metrics for ranking sites

Weaknesses

  • Daily limits are not stated
  • No on-page audit listed
  • Pushes toward a paid plan

5. Detailed SEO Extension

Best free on-page inspector
  • PriceFree
  • Account neededNo
  • BrowsersChrome and Firefox
  • Chrome Web Store600,000 users, updated June 2026

Detailed shows what an SEO checks first on any page: title, meta description, robots directives, headings, links, images, schema and hreflang, each a click away. It also pulls the People Also Ask questions from a results page.

It is free with no account and no upsell, and it is quick. It does not show keyword volume or authority metrics, so most people pair it with a keyword extension.

Strengths

  • Free, no account, no upsells
  • Fast and well organised
  • CSV exports

Weaknesses

  • No keyword volume or CPC
  • No authority metric
  • No broken link check listed

6. SEOquake

Best free metrics on the results page
  • PriceFree; a Semrush account adds more
  • Account neededOptional
  • BrowsersChrome
  • Chrome Web Store1,000,000 users, updated October 2026

SEOquake, from Semrush, lays a bar of metrics under every Google result, such as domain rank, estimated organic traffic and backlinks, and adds an on-page audit, a keyword density report and a broken link check.

The core is free without an account. Connecting a Semrush account adds Authority Score and deeper data. It does not show search volume or CPC for the query.

Strengths

  • A lot of data free, with no account
  • On-page audit, density and broken links
  • PDF and CSV exports

Weaknesses

  • No search volume or CPC
  • Authority Score needs a Semrush sign-in
  • The results page gets crowded

Source: its Chrome Web Store listing, October 2026.

7. Ahrefs SEO Toolbar

Best free technical checks
  • PriceFree; SERP and keyword data from $29/month
  • Account neededFor DR and UR
  • BrowsersChrome, Firefox and Safari
  • Chrome Web Store400,000 users, updated September 2026

The free part of the Ahrefs toolbar is a capable technical inspector: on-page report, hreflang and canonical checks, a redirect tracer, HTTP headers, a link highlighter and a broken link check.

Domain Rating and URL Rating need a free sign-in. Keyword volume, difficulty and the metrics on Google results need a paid Ahrefs plan, which starts at $29 a month. See the Ahrefs alternative page.

Strengths

  • Strong free technical checks
  • Redirect tracer and header viewer
  • Chrome, Firefox and Safari

Weaknesses

  • Keyword and results-page data are paid
  • DR and UR need an account
  • Best value only if you already pay for Ahrefs

Sources: the Ahrefs SEO Toolbar website and its Chrome Web Store listing, October 2026.

8. MozBar

Best for Domain Authority
  • PriceFree with a Moz account; more with Moz Pro
  • Account neededFor DA and PA
  • BrowsersChrome
  • Chrome Web Store900,000 users, updated September 2026

MozBar puts Domain Authority and Page Authority on any page and beside every Google result, which is still the metric many clients ask about. It also checks schema, hreflang, robots and image alt text.

Without an account it shows on-page elements and link details only. DA and PA need a free Moz account, and page optimisation and keyword queries need Moz Pro.

Strengths

  • DA and PA on pages and results
  • Link colouring by type
  • CSV export of results

Weaknesses

  • Metrics need an account
  • No search volume without Moz Pro
  • Lowest store rating of the group

Source: its Chrome Web Store listing, October 2026.

9. Mangools SEO Extension

Best for Moz and Majestic metrics together
  • PriceFree checks; metrics need a Mangools account
  • Account neededFor metrics
  • BrowsersChrome and Firefox
  • Chrome Web Store50,000 users, updated August 2026

The Mangools extension shows Moz's DA and PA beside Majestic's Citation Flow and Trust Flow, with backlinks and the keywords a page ranks for. On-page and page-speed checks are free without an account.

The authority metrics, keywords and backlinks need a Mangools account, which starts with a 10-day free trial. More on the Mangools alternative page.

Strengths

  • Two authority providers in one panel
  • On-page and speed checks are free
  • Chrome and Firefox

Weaknesses

  • Best data sits behind a trial or paid plan
  • Smallest user base here
  • Trial ends after 10 days

Sources: the Mangools SEO Extension website and its Chrome Web Store listing, October 2026.

10. SEO Minion

Best technical toolkit for Keywords Everywhere customers
  • PriceNeeds a Keywords Everywhere Silver plan ($168/year) or higher
  • Account neededYes
  • BrowsersChrome, Firefox and Edge
  • Chrome Web Store200,000 users, updated February 2026

SEO Minion bundles on-page analysis, link highlighting, a broken link check, redirect tracing, hreflang validation, a results preview, a search location simulator and a comparison of the page's HTML with its rendered version.

It was free for years. Its listing now says it is available only to customers of Keywords Everywhere's Silver plan or higher, so it is best seen as part of that subscription.

Strengths

  • Wide range of technical checks
  • Location simulator for local results
  • Chrome, Firefox and Edge

Weaknesses

  • No longer free
  • Tied to a Keywords Everywhere annual plan
  • No keyword volume of its own

Sources: the SEO Minion website and its Chrome Web Store listing, October 2026.

11. Redirect Path

Best for redirects
  • PriceFree
  • Account neededNo
  • BrowsersChrome
  • Chrome Web Store300,000 users, updated May 2026

Redirect Path, from Ayima, does one thing well. It shows every step a URL took to reach the page in front of you: 301 and 302 redirects, 404 and 500 errors, and the meta and JavaScript redirects that other tools miss.

It also shows response headers and the server address. It is a specialist, so it sits beside a broader extension, not in place of one.

Strengths

  • Shows each hop of a redirect chain
  • Catches meta and JavaScript redirects
  • Free, works locally

Weaknesses

  • Single purpose
  • No on-page or keyword data
  • Checks one URL at a time

Sources: the Redirect Path website and its Chrome Web Store listing, October 2026.

12. SEO META in 1 CLICK

Best for a quick look at meta tags
  • PriceFree

One click shows the title and description with their lengths, canonical, robots, the heading order, image alt counts, link counts and the Open Graph and Twitter tags, with links to robots.txt and the sitemap.

It is simple and very highly rated. It has not been updated since August 2024, which is worth knowing before you rely on it.

Strengths

  • Very simple
  • Free, no account
  • Highly rated by a large user base

Weaknesses

  • Not updated since August 2024
  • No broken link or schema validation listed

It is free with no account, and exports to CSV. Its last update was in November 2024.

Strengths

  • Core Web Vitals field data
  • Redirect chains and status codes
  • Free, no account

Weaknesses

  • Not updated since November 2024

  • No broken link check listed

  • Google Search alone, or Google Search plus search partners
  • Switch keyword data, related keywords and authority badges on or off separately

How these SEO extensions were compared

Each entry is based on the extension's Chrome Web Store listing, and its maker's own site where available, read in October 2026: what it shows, what is free, whether it needs an account, which browsers it supports and when it was last updated. SEO Chrome extensions - FAQ

What is the best SEO Chrome extension?
It depends on the job. For keyword volume, CPC, authority badges and an on-page audit in one extension, KWScanner. For a free on-page inspector with nothing else, Detailed SEO Extension. For free link metrics on the results page, SEOquake. Most SEOs keep one keyword extension and one technical extension installed.
Which Chrome extensions show search volume on Google?
KWScanner, Keywords Everywhere, Keyword Surfer and Ubersuggest show search volume and CPC on the Google results page. Keyword Surfer is free, Ubersuggest is free with daily limits, Keywords Everywhere needs paid credits, and KWScanner gives 10,000 free lookups and then costs from $5 for 10,000. The Ahrefs toolbar shows volume only on a paid plan.
Are there free SEO Chrome extensions?
Yes. Detailed SEO Extension, SEOquake, Redirect Path and SEO META in 1 CLICK are free. Keyword Surfer shows volume for free. In KWScanner, the on-page audit and the Domain Rating and domain age badges are free with no account, and keyword lookups start with 10,000 free credits.
What does the KWScanner extension do?
It shows search volume, CPC, competition and a trend of up to four years on the Google results page, adds Domain Rating and domain age to every result, lists related keywords, and audits any page for on-page SEO with a PDF report. The full feature list is on this page.
Do SEO extensions work in Firefox?
Some do. KWScanner, Keywords Everywhere, Detailed SEO Extension, the Ahrefs toolbar, the Mangools extension, SEO Minion and SEO Pro Extension all have Firefox versions. Keyword Surfer is listed for Chrome only.
Are SEO Chrome extensions safe?
Extensions that read pages need permission to do so, which Chrome describes as reading and changing data on the sites you visit. Stick to extensions from known companies, check when they were last updated, and remove the ones you no longer use. Two extensions on this list have not been updated since 2024, as their entries note.
How many SEO extensions should I install?
As few as cover your work. Each extension that runs on Google results adds its own panel, and several at once make the page slow and crowded. One extension for keyword data and one for technical checks is enough for most people.
