What is keyword search volume?
Search volume is the average number of times people search for a keyword on Google each month. A keyword search volume checker turns that into one number you can plan with: a topic with 40,000 searches a month can bring far more visitors than one with 40, and a keyword nobody searches will not bring anyone, however well the page ranks.
The figure is a 12-month average, so a seasonal keyword such as "christmas gift ideas" reads lower than its December peak and higher than its summer low. That is why this checker shows the last 12 months as well: the shape of the bars tells you when the searches happen.
How to use the search volume checker
- Type one keyword or phrase, exactly as people would search it.
- Choose the country you want to rank in, or worldwide.
- Press Check volume to see monthly searches, cost per click, competition and the 12-month trend.
Check the closest variations too. "Keyword volume checker" and "search volume checker" mean the same thing to a reader but can have very different volumes, and the larger one is usually the better choice for your title and main heading.
How to choose keywords with search volume data
- Volume shows demand. Look for keywords with enough searches to be worth a page, then judge whether you can compete for them.
- CPC shows value. A high cost per click means advertisers earn money from this traffic, so ranking for it organically is worth more.
- The trend shows timing. Rising bars point to a growing topic. A single spike means you should publish a few weeks before the busy month.
- Long phrases add up. Keywords with 50 to 500 searches a month are often easier to rank for, and many of them together can bring more traffic than one big keyword.
Why search volume differs between tools
This checker uses Google Ads Keyword Planner data, which comes from Google itself. Many keyword tools estimate volume from clickstream panels and ranking models instead, so the same keyword can show quite different numbers from one tool to the next. Google also groups volumes into rounded figures, which is why you will often see values such as 1,300, 2,900 or 5,400.
Frequently asked questions
Is this keyword volume checker free?
Yes. You can check 10 keywords a day for free, with no sign-up and no credit card. Each check shows monthly search volume, cost per click, competition and the last 12 months of searches.
How many keywords can I check?
One keyword per search and 10 searches a day. To check a whole list at once, a free KWScanner account comes with 1,000 keyword lookups, and the dashboard checks up to 3,000 keywords in one go.
Where does the search volume data come from?
From Google Ads Keyword Planner, the same source Google gives advertisers. The figure is the average number of monthly searches over the last 12 months.
Why do different tools show different search volumes?
Tools that do not use Google's own data estimate volume from clickstream panels and ranking models, so their numbers can differ a lot. Google also rounds volumes into ranges, which is why many keywords show tidy figures such as 1,300 or 2,900.
Can I check search volume by country?
Yes. Choose worldwide, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand or South Africa before you search.
Why does a keyword show zero searches?
Google reports no meaningful search volume for it in the country you chose. Very long or very specific phrases often have too few searches to report. Try a shorter version, or check another country.
What do CPC and competition mean?
CPC is the average amount advertisers pay for one click on an ad for this keyword, which shows how commercially valuable the traffic is. Competition runs from 0 to 1 and shows how many advertisers bid on the keyword. It is about paid ads, not how hard the keyword is to rank for in organic results.
